Home Affairs Adviser Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said that the tenure of the interim government is nearing its end.

He made the remark on Wednesday (27 August) while addressing as chief guest at the handover ceremony of the Farmers’ Mini Cold Storage in Dhalla area of Singair upazila, Manikganj.

“Our time is running out, but before leaving we want to enact a comprehensive agricultural law to ensure that farmland is not diverted for other purposes,” the adviser said. He added that landowners currently receive three times the value of their land during acquisitions for Roads and Highways projects, and the same provision will be applied in cases involving the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED).

Urging public awareness for environmental protection, he further said, “If you stop using polythene and plastic bottles, it will be easier to return to jute-based products. Actions are already being taken against polythene and plastic use. Just as our forefathers used jute bags, we too must return to them. This will protect both agriculture and the environment.”

The event was also attended by Manikganj Deputy Commissioner Dr. Manowar Hossain Molla, Superintendent of Police Mosammat Yasmin Khatun, and District Agriculture Officer Dr. Rabiah Noor.
