Bangladesh Urged to Prioritize Clean and Affordable Energy Solutions

Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser to Bangladesh’s Interim Government, emphasized the urgent need for the country to transition to clean, safe, and affordable energy to ensure sustainable economic growth.

Speaking on Thursday (18 September) during a virtual conference with Carl Page, Chairman of the Anthroposin Institute, and his colleagues, Professor Yunus highlighted Bangladesh’s vulnerability as a densely populated and climate-sensitive nation, noting that long-term reliance on fossil fuels is no longer viable.

He called for serious consideration of alternative energy sources, particularly large-scale solar power installations, as part of the country’s clean energy strategy.

Carl Page, brother of Google co-founder Larry Page, discussed advances in next-generation nuclear technology and hybrid systems capable of delivering reliable, zero-carbon electricity. He stressed that small modular nuclear reactors are cost-effective, require minimal maintenance, and could supply power to Bangladesh’s growing industrial sector for decades.

Page noted that nuclear energy is no longer off-limits to major development finance institutions like the World Bank. Countries such as Indonesia are already adopting these technologies to meet rising energy demand.

He praised Bangladesh’s strong track record in innovation, suggesting the country could lead in clean energy transformation—boosting employment, stabilizing energy prices, and enhancing industrial competitiveness. Page added that Bangladesh could become a strategic hub for emerging technologies and a peaceful leader in nuclear innovation.

Professor Yunus also mentioned that the interim government recently introduced a new national electricity policy prioritizing solar energy adoption. However, he emphasized that any nuclear energy decisions must be preceded by thorough research and feasibility studies.

Participants included Chaudhury Ashik Mahmud bin Harun, Executive Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), and Lamia Morshed, Senior Secretary and Chief Coordinator for SDGs.
