Mehedi Hasan Shamim, a Bangladeshi student pursuing higher education in the United States, has been left in critical condition following a serious incident in Brooklyn, New York. Questions have emerged over whether the incident was merely a hit-and-run accident or involved a possible racial motive.

Shamim, a former student of Salimullah Muslim Hall at the University of Dhaka, moved to the United States on a fully funded scholarship to pursue his academic ambitions and build a better future.

According to available information, Shamim was riding his bicycle to his destination when a vehicle suddenly struck him and fled the scene. Police rescued him in a severely injured condition and took him to Kings County Hospital for treatment.

Medical sources said he sustained serious head injuries and suffered internal bleeding. He is currently under intensive medical observation at the hospital.

Adding to the distressing situation, Shamim lives alone in the United States, without any family members or close relatives nearby. Meanwhile, his family in Bangladesh is passing through days of extreme anxiety and uncertainty as they wait for updates on his condition.

Following the incident, Shamim contacted his personal attorney, Farhan Aryan, and informed him about what had happened. Upon receiving the call, Attorney Aryan rushed to the hospital and spoke with the injured student to gather details about the incident.

Attorney Farhan Aryan said the matter was being treated with utmost seriousness. He stressed that investigators should also examine whether there was any racial motivation behind the incident.

He further said that necessary legal steps would be taken to ensure a fair and impartial investigation, uncover the facts and bring those responsible to justice. Every individual has the right to justice under the US legal system, and Shamim would receive the necessary legal assistance, he added.

The incident has raised several questions: Was it simply a road accident, or was there a racial or other motive behind the attack? Why was a young student left so seriously injured? Answers to these questions now depend on a thorough investigation.

The ordeal of a young Bangladeshi who travelled thousands of miles in pursuit of higher education is a matter of concern not only for his family but also for the wider Bangladeshi community in the United States.

Ensuring the safety and security of international students is just as important as providing them with opportunities to pursue their education and fulfil their dreams abroad.

We hope Mehedi Hasan Shamim makes a speedy recovery and returns to normal life soon. We also expect a fair investigation, the establishment of the facts and justice for the injured student.

Bangla Hour wishes Mehedi Hasan Shamim a speedy recovery.
