The traditional handmade red sugar of Fulbaria in Mymensingh has officially received Geographical Indication (GI) recognition, marking a milestone for the region’s heritage product.
Produced from sugarcane juice without the use of chemicals, Fulbaria’s red sugar is rich in natural nutrients, containing calcium, potassium, iron, and magnesium. The GI tag highlights the product’s unique production process and quality, giving it special geographic identification.
Local farmers and producers are expected to benefit significantly from the recognition, as it will strengthen market opportunities both at home and abroad.
Traditional Process
The production method involves extracting sugarcane juice, boiling it in large cauldrons, and stirring until the liquid thickens and dries into fine, powder-like sugar. This practice is rooted in the red soil-rich hilly areas of Fulbaria, where the craft has been preserved for generations. Currently, sugarcane is cultivated on 650 hectares of land in the region.
Officials’ Remarks
Fulbaria Upazila Agriculture Officer Nur Mohammad said the GI application was submitted with the support of the local administration and has now been successfully approved. “This recognition will enhance the reputation of Fulbaria’s red sugar not only in Bangladesh but also internationally,” he noted.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Nahidul Karim added that since no objections were raised by other regions, the GI recognition was granted. He also confirmed that applications for new certification have been submitted.
