Gaza, Aug 30, 2025 — Children in Gaza are growing so weak from hunger and disease that many can no longer even cry, according to Save the Children President Inger Ashing, who described the humanitarian catastrophe in heart-wrenching terms.
The United Nations formally declared famine in the Gaza Strip last week, stressing that it is not just a “technical term” but a grim reality of children slowly wasting away in pain when food is no longer available.
Speaking to AFP, Ashing explained that starving children first consume stored body fat, and when that is depleted, their muscles and vital organs are gradually broken down. “Despite this, our clinics are almost silent. Children no longer have the strength to speak or even cry in pain. They simply lie weak, while their bodies waste away,” she said.
Al Jazeera reported that on Friday alone, five more people — including two children — died of hunger and malnutrition, raising the toll from famine to 322, among them 121 children. The UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) said 500,000 people in Gaza are now enduring famine. By the end of September, two-thirds of the territory could be affected.
Global Outrage and Sanctions
The famine declaration has sparked protests worldwide and prompted governments to act against Israel. CNN reported that the UK has banned Israeli officials from attending a major arms fair in London next month, a sign of widening rifts between Israel and Western powers. At the UN Security Council, 13 of the 14 member states — all except the United States — expressed “concern and outrage” at the famine announcement.
Death Toll Surpasses 63,000
Despite the famine, Israeli strikes continue. On Friday, at least 59 Palestinians, including 23 waiting for aid, were killed, bringing the overall death toll to 63,025 since the war began. Another 159,490 people have been injured. Since May 27 alone, 2,203 people seeking aid have been killed and 16,228 injured.
Gaza City Declared a Battlefield
Israel’s military announced Friday that Gaza City is now an “active battlefield,” launching operations on its outskirts, particularly in the Zeitoun and Sabra neighborhoods. NBC News reported that the assault will displace thousands more Palestinians already trapped by hunger and bombardment.
